Why We Should Believe In The Bible

We are a Bible believing, Bible teaching, and Bible practicing people. A "Thus Saith The Lord" is shown to everyone as to everything we are and what is done as a church, in worship, in organization, and in teaching the lost. Why do we believe the Bible?

1. It contains the world’s greatest ethical standards. The Old Testament ten commandments have had the greatest impact on the world of all the writings outside of those written by Jesus Christ. (Exodus 20:1-17; Deuteronomy 5:6-21) The show the truth of One God, prohibit idol making or worship, and tell people to not take God’s name in vain. The Sabbath of rest and worship are needed by people. The world is now under the New Testament so ours is the first day of the week for worship. The home is exalted with honor and respect for parents. There is to be no sex outside of marriage and when there is it is the sin of adultery. Human life is to be held sacred. People re to respect the property of others. People should not bear false witness nor covet what belongs to another. The sermon on the mount as delivered by Jesus is the world’s masterpiece of literature. (Matthew 5 -7) From it we get the golden rule, ;earn to love everyone; even those who are our enemies. The importance of prayer and learning how to pray. Sincerity in worship is necessary along with worship as God wants it rather than to please ourselves. The need of depending on God for necessities while we seek first the kingdom of God is taught. If we would just learn this and couple together effort and the trust we will have the things we need in life. That would save much of the worry of which so many of us are guilty. Control of actions and control of words are taught in this great dissertation on life. If men take away the Bible from their lives they have missed the greatest lessons on how to live a good life and even how to be successful in life.

2. We should believe the Bible because it shows us that we are responsible for our lives. We shall all give an account to God for our lives. "So then everyone of us shall give account of himself to God." (Romans 14:12) God will bring every work into judgement. (Ecclesiastes 12:14) The dead, small and great, shall stand before God and give account. (Revelation 20:11, 12) We need to believe the Bible and get our record right for judgement day.

3. We can safely believe the Bible because every prophecy given in it have either been fulfilled or will be fulfilled. Prophecy of Israel being a nation and giving Palestine for a homeland was fulfilled. (Read Joshua 21:43-45) They were also told, "If ye forsake the Lord, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you hurt, and consume you after that he hath done you good." (Joshua 24:20) God did this as seen in Matthew 23:37-39 along with the history of the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. The prophecies of the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Christ were also fulfilled in detail. Compare Isaiah 7:14 with Matthew 1:23. Compare Psalms 16:8-11 with Acts 2:28-34. Compare Isaiah 53 with Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, and John 19. There are also prophecies of the New Testament about the future. If all the Old Testament prophecies have been fulfilled we can be assured that the New Testament prophecies will also be fulfilled. Such prophecies as Christ coming again (John 14:1-6), the resurrection of the dead (John 5:28, 29), the judgment day (Revelation 20:11-15), everlasting punishment for the unrighteous (Matthew 25:41-46), heaven for the righteous (Revelation 21). Another great promise is that the Bible will not pass away but will endure forever. (Matthew 24:35; I Peter 1:25) There have been many people who have discredited the Bible and predicted that no one would listen to it but they are wrong. It is still the world’s best seller. According to John 12:48 it will face us in the judgment and we will have to give account for failing to obey its commands for us.

4. It is the only book that deals with our sin problems. People of the world deny that there is any such thing as sin. Beginning at Genesis 4:7 and continuing through the book of Revelation, hundreds of times, sin is shown for what it is in the Bible. People sin by transgressing the laws of God. (I John 3:4) People sin by knowing to do good and doing it not. (James 4:17) We call this sins of omission. God wants us to glorify him. When we pay no attention to our blessings and never thank God nor praise him we are guilty of omitting him from our lives. The most spectacular verse says, "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23) As such we are dead in trespasses and sins.(Ephesians 2:1) As such we are wretched because we cannot save ourselves from our sins. But thanks be to God that "now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ." (Ephesians 2:13) We reach that blood by dying tot he love of sin in faith, dying to the practice of sinful acts by repentance, and dying to the guilt of sin by baptism. The Lord forgive because Jesus is the one who died in our stead. Just reach out to him in faith and take what he offers. Without the Bible we would not know of Christ ad his redeeming love.

5. The Bible makes claim for itself of being God’s message to man. "For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." (II Peter 1:21) A good example of this is Jeremiah to whom "the word of the Lord came and he named the kings of Judah during whose time he prophesied. Jeremiah told the Lord, "I cannot speak; for I am a child" but the Lord touched his mouth and said, "Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth." (Jeremiah 1:1, 2, 6, 9) He is an example of how the Lord spoke through all of his prophets to give the Bible to humanity. Paul said, "which words we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth: comparing spiritual things with spiritual." (I Corinthians 2:13) This is in line with, "All scripture is given by the inspiration of God.." (II Timothy 3:16, 17) Since it is God’s message then it is very important and we should believe everything it says.

6. The Bible is also our guide in religion. It is "profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." (II Timothy 3:16, 17) Read it to be wise and practice it to be holy. C.D.
